Life with the Dogges

Tonka Loves wheelbarrow rides (what a meat head:)!

The bullies I own and have known, have proven themselves as admirable loyal companions, protectors against wild animals and ill intentioned humans, qualities that are a trade mark of the bully breeds. They love bushwacking, scouting, a good old game of tug O'war. These dogs have proven themselves to be alert, courageous, stubborn and  comical.
They have a flair for creating the most nosiest and uniquely sounding snores, inventing new comical obnoxious ways to get your attention, the release of noxious gases (also known as breaking wind), unfailing to deliver a guggly burb right in the face; But their loyalty and devotion is everything you could ask for in a dog.
I decided bullys were what I was lacking in my search for the ultimate dog, and I am not disapointed. This just gives a tid bit of what these type of dogs are about.

Pets are therapeutic:
The joy experienced when in the company of a good dog has proven to be significantly beneficial for our health.
They have the natural ability to:

  • Entertain and make us laugh
  • Reduce stress induced symptoms
  • Petting a dog can lower blood pressure, calm the nerves and lower anxiety levels
  • Boost peoples moods & encourages social interaction
  • Dogs provide unconditional, non judgemental love and affection
  • Encourage empathy and responsibility, teaching us to be less self absorbed
  • Can reduce loneliness and boredom
  • Be our friends and defenders, offering companionship and loyalty

Olde English Bulldogge

Vrs

English/British Bulldog

whats the difference?

Olde English Bulldogges are a recreation of the British/English Bulldog or simply Bulldog from the eras of the 16th to 18th centuries.
The original Bulldogs were first developed and used in England & the British Isles specificly for bringing unruly bovine stock in for butchering; which soon progressed into blood sports (bull & bear baiting: see history page for an indepth study)
The modern Bulldog (also known as the AKC/CKC standard type) has changed dramatically from its early forebearers, who were specifically designed for the purpose of canine gladiator bloodsports. They had to be physically active and functional (a working bulldogge).
The modern Bulldog has evolved away from its original design and intent, becoming distinctly different in body type and capabilities from its predecessor.
The Olde English Bulldogge adheres closer to the original breed type standards, where it is more physically functional. It breeds naturaly and whelps without surgical interferance
(also known as c-sections).
It carries the typical characteristics and looks of the bulldog without the serious health complications and physical restraints associated with the modern Bulldog.
The OEB (short for Olde English Bulldogge) is considerably larger, with more leg and a healthier respiritory sytem which dramatically improves its physical capabilities. They are more active, mentally alert, responsive, and carry substantial stamina and virility.
Bulldog breeds Today:
You may see crosses of bully breeds on the internet called Old Style/Old Tyme/Olde Bulldogs which are bulldog breeds in development or are simply crosses of bulldog breeds designed for an allround healthier, functional bulldog. They may be in the hybrid process stages or foundation stages of Olde English, Victorian or Other new designer bull.  More information about these type of breedings can be found at the
Victorian Bulldogge Association (Old Style Page)

      Breeding Program

It is my ambition and goal to breed for the betterment, health and preservation of bulldogges.
To produce and maintain a desired qaulity specimin with consistency, while adding distinct style.
My dogs are health tested through various in the feild assesments, alongside modern technological programs & procedures. My forthmost concern is quality, which entails strict selective breeding ethics. I import quality show and working boodlines into my program, selectively chosen for conformation, strength and durability.

Dogs used in my program have been  Mountain Bushman tested and approved,
VolHard P.A.T Aptitude
Volhard Canine Personality Profiling
Paws Working Dog evaluated before complimenting my program, this is to ensure only the best is used for show and breeding, which is the backbone of the next generation of progeny.

  Breeding Philosophy

I am Old school, I belive culling is a tool used to preserve, maintain and protect a healthy breeding program. I know there are enough unwanted, disabled, neglected dogs out in the world. I am active in rescue fostering and aiding in placing of bulldog breeds in particular. If you are not into showing or breeding please consider a dog that is sitting in a very unfun place right now at your local animal shelter or choose pet stock when buying from a breeder.

Breeding Program Mission

I wanted a bulldog that could handle the outdoors and live an active lifestyle, hiking and scouting the mountains.
I began my own lines from scratch, using some very special dogs in the foundation to gain beneficial qualities to further improve breed development.
Focusing on sound Temperment, Health, Conformation, Substance, Virility and Genetic components.
Specializing exclusively in selectively bred, cultivated rare colors.
My goals are to produce the classic bully builds, with noble head pieces, wide chests, strong, solid compact builds with exceptional colors.
It is the primary ideal to promote and implement a natural breeding program where males naturaly copulate and bitches freely whelp.

Much forethought and extensive research has been applied in implementing discernment around the program; Every Decision has a purpose and reason behind the choices made.
Dedicated to preserving the working heritage and functionable bulldogge.
My Bulldogs are unique and authentic, posessing fascinating colors and genetics.

It is a personal choice and passion for me to work with these selective strains.
There are many reputable Established Olde Bulldogge bloodlines for those who seek quality traditional standard colors. To me, I wanted something different and my goals are set to produce spectacular alternative Olde Bulldogges.

                               Rearing Dogges

My dogges and puppies are raised underfoot in my country kitchen to ensure proper socialization and evaluation. My dogges are part of the family, they require work and play to ensure a healthy well rounded both physically and mentally sound dog.
I believe bulldogs need work and exercise, it keeps them happy in the head and the body.
Temperment is so extremely important in a breeding program, it cannot be stressed enough, It is the first to make or break a first impression in the public eye.
I believe it is imperative to establish and maintain a solid versatile temperment, blended with appropriate drive in equal proportions for aspiring the full complete package.

Rearing Dogges Holisticaly

I use a Holistic & Natural approach to rearing my dogs, using the Raw Meaty Bones diet alongside premium holistic kibbles.
 First Mate, Pets 1st, Iams
I don't believe in feeding one brand of kibble for the life of a dog, which can cause allergies and long term health affects.
By Utilizing the best out of a variety of quality brands, this gives the dogs optimal nutritional selection. This encourages the body to build a stronger resistance with a naturaly enhanced healthy immunity.
I also use Herbal & Natural remedies on my dogges with proven results.
Rural living provides fresh air, sun, trees, grass, fresh mountain river waters, prime outdoor excercise conditions and overall a mentally stimulating environment.
Natural Rearing, BARF feeding, HomeoPathic and Light Massage therapy, Flower essences, Plant and Vegetable extracts are some forms of utilizing alternative nutrient health enhancing, preventative protocols and aquiring desirable wholesome living which effects the whole body.
Some of the benefits to Natural Rearing are:
  • Maintains a healthy optimal working weight.
  • Enhances natural muscle tone and flexibility.
  • Restores & Strengthens the immune system.
  • Restores Vitality and Energy.
  • Reduces unhealthy doggy odors.
  • Helps aid in healthy digestion and waste, substantially better "Poops".
  • Restores and maintains a healthier skin and coat.
  • Keeps teeth & mouth bacteria healthier, stronger, reduces tarter build up.
  • Reduces parasitical inhabitants.
  • Eyes are brighter more alert and clean.
  • Nails tend to grow faster and are stronger, pads are hardier, pliable.
  • Aids in reducing allergies.
  • Strengthens Immunities, ineffect reduces serious life threatening diseases and illnesses over the long term, prolonging life.
  • Medicinal properties from herbs and flower extracts are a healthier alternative to healing the body from the inside out.
I also use conventional methods when warranted and still aquire a professionals opinion, and assistance when it goes beyond my experience and knowledge.

Homestead BullHunde Bulldogges are show prospects, working potentials or the best friend you could ask for in the Feild or by the Hearth.

Finding a Breeder and a Bully

If you are a first timer into the (Bullies),
I recomend doing your research on bulldog breeds, researching breeders and registries to find what best suits your tastes, requirements & expectations of what you want out of the dog and out of a breeder. There are many links on the net that will give good evaluation to what to look for in a good breeder. Some are extreme while others are more in the realm of reality for rational expectations of breeders. Breeders also have the responsibility to thoroughly screen to find the best possible homes for their dogs.
Note there are different purposes, lifestyles and uses for bulldogs used by breeders, ranging anywhere from the show ring,  protection work, wild boar hunting, weight pulling and more. It is important to know your own personal level of what you can handle for character and activity as bulldogs can range from high spirited dare devils to layed back lugers.

There will be slight variations to the Olde Bulldogge resulting from different bloodlines, each breeder striving for their own preferred style while still abiding to a set standard.

I only want to provide my style with people who enjoy it as much as I do, I will gladly help you in a direction or refer you to a breeder should I not have what you are searching for. A person should never just "settle" for a dog but strive to find the perfect match, in doing so, will ultimately produce a healthier & happier match for both the owner & pup involved.

Health Concerns and typical body issues for Bully Breeds:

         (Brachycephalic~Short Muzzled Breeds)

  • Eye Issues: entropian, ectropian, cherry eye, cataracts, distichiasis (irregular eyelash growth), progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma.
  • Breathing Issues: elongated soft palate (causing snarfing, throat rattle, snoring), small tracheas, dyspnea, stenontic nares( pinched nostrils).
  • Skin Issues: demodect, allergies, hives, alopecia, cysts, tumors, dermatitis, canine eczema, yeast infections.
  • Heart Issues: murmers, aortic stenosis, mitral valve dysplasia.
  • Skelletal Issues: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, knee and joint breakdown, arthritis, luxating patella, hemivertebra, wry jaw, malformed tails
  • Reproduction Issues: unable to free breed requiring artificial insemination, unable to free whelp requiring c-sections, false pregnancies, pyometra, mastitis, prolapse vulva, swimmer puppies.
  • Internal Issues: bloat, urinary infections, sensitivity to vaccinations, sensitivity to anesthesia, sensitivity to hot & cold temperatures, thyroid problems, deafness, gas, cleft palate.
  • External Issues: tear stains, drooling, dry nose, interdigital toe cysts, sore wrinkles, fold dermatitis, cleft lip, ear infections, sleep apnea, head shakes, hernia.
The purpose of recreating the Olde English Bulldogge or alternative bully is to create a healthier, more active specimen of Bulldog.
Breeders strive to breed away from the above problems as best as can be applied in this day and age.
Note: It is important to be aware that OEB's are not problem free, they are not perfect and although breeders work to improve health, it still is a bulldog breed and susceptible to genetic anomalies beyond our control.
OEB's can still get any of the health issues that the modern Bulldog can have, it is just less prevalent and doesn't show up as often; this is an important aspect that needs to be understood for prospective buyers.
We recommend people do their research and homework on their breed of choice.

Health Care & Maintenance Of Bullies

Bullies require dedicated daily care management to maintain a healthy optimal level.

  •  All dogs require a quality diet & fresh water provided at all times. Stainless steel or porcelain food dishes are recommended as they do not retain odors or bacteria and are less apt to rust or scratch.
  • It is recomended that a pet bed or soft area to rest is provided to relieve stress on bones and joints.

  • Bully breeds require a multitude of toys & chew mongers of various textures to relieve their insatiable appetite for chewing. They are naturaly endowed with prominently developed jaws and require an outlet to relieve their instinctual needs. It also works to clean Teeth and reduce tartar & plaque build up as well as keeps them mentally content.
  • Daily to weekly brushing is needed to keep the Coat clean, healthy and free of dead hairs, debris and dander build up.
  • Bathing can be done once a month or on a need to basis, using natural products that are safe to sensitive skin.
  • Eyes need to be cleaned gently and regularily from morning guck and grime, using water or natural eye cleanzers.
  • Ears should be cleaned regularily to avoid bacteria build up and from mites, using ear cleaner solutions and wipes.
  • Some bullies get dry Nose and may require a neutral moisturizer such as Vaseline or Bag balm to heal and soften cracked dry nose leather.
  • Wrinkles should be checked & cleaned regularily to avoid bacteria build up. Some irritated wrinkles may require a medicated powder or polysporine for more sensitive raw areas.
  • Tear stains can be removed using baby wipes, or a dampened tissue then dried.
  • Some bullies have screw tails and may require their bums and tails to be cleaned and dried to avoid bacteria build up in crevices.
  • Feet & Pads should be checked for any interdigital toe cysts, cuts or foreign objects that may be causing lameness, or discomfort.
  • Nails need to be kept trimmed regularily to avoid painful feet and stress to the joints. Nails should be cut right before the "Quick". On light colored nails you can see the pink quick inside through the wall of the nail. On dark nails you can see a black spot appear on the end of the nail after you cut it. If cutting too close causes the nail to bleed, styptic powder, alum, cornstrach or other coagulant can be externaly applied.
  • Both Puppies & Adults require regular dewormings & preventative vaccination protocols.
Training A Bully Pup:
  • Bulldog puppies require substancial socializing and obedience work from a very early age.
  • Consistent, Firm but kind training will benefit a young developing dog. Tones of voice can be very effective in training and should be used with care, many people mistake bullies as not hearing, however they are very aware of subtle cues.
  • Most bullies respond well to treats and positive affirmation. A cheery reponse from the handler on a desired behavior from the pup will encourage the pup, and its attitude towards learning.
  • Puppies need to be taught boundaries and what is off limits. They need to be taught how to behave, how to react when a visitor comes in, or if another dog comes up to it, what the owner expects must first be learned by the pup.
  • They require hands on instruction & guidance from their leader and owner.

        Bully Breed Characteristics

Note: Most bulldog breeds come with the predisposition of being strong willed, challenging, stubborn, bullheaded, pushy, independent, self-confident, determined, mentally and physically dominant. They may carry dog aggressive tendencies, or prey drive towards livestock, wild animals or other. They may possess strong protective tendencies towards their owners, masters, homes or territory be it a vehicle or personal space.
IN extreme cases
where lack of socialization or geneticaly tempermental issues arise, some can become timid, unpredictable, threatening and show outward aggression.
It is highly recommended for anyone considering a bully breed that they realize socialization is Key, As well as a dominant mentality for any owner to be able to apply alpha position over the dog and ensure all family members, including children are above the dog in pack hearichy.
On the other end of the spectrum, bully breeds can be goofy comedians, loyal, dependable, courageous defenders and a steadfast companion to the end.
